What's Matcha?

Jodie Parus, RD, LD

Matcha is an antioxidant-rich, concentrated, powdered form of green tea. Although it is centuries old, matcha is having a modern moment, now a popular health drink.  matcha powder

Green tea leaves are dried and ground, creating a powder with a powerful punch with more than 10 times the antioxidants of green tea and double the caffeine.

Traditional matcha tea is made by mixing 1 teaspoon of matcha powder with about 1/3 cup of water, which is then whisked with a bamboo brush to froth. Alternatively, matcha powder can be mixed with yogurt or sprinkled over an array of foods.

Again, since matcha powder is full green tea leaves ground into a powder versus steeped leaves, it is a much more potent source of nutrients. Matcha is rich in antioxidants called polyphenols, which have been tied to protection against heart disease and cancer, as well as better blood sugar regulation, blood pressure reduction, and anti-aging. Another polyphenol in matcha called EGCG has been shown in research to boost metabolism, and slow or halt the growth of cancer cells.

So, should you jump on the matcha train? If you want to give it a try, look for a good quality pure match powder rather than a matcha powder mix. The mix may contain sugar as well as powdered milk. Finally, consumption should be limited to one cup per day.
