The Effects of Nutrition on Children's Behavior

By Jodie Parus, RD, LDChildren's Nutrition

School has only just begun for the year, but some parents may have already received a call in regards to their child's behavior...disrupting class, lack of concentration or behavior affecting performance may have been mentioned.

Scores of parents struggle with their children's behavior on a regular basis, from irritability, to being over-stimulated, to just not following directions. Families may be unaware of the connection between nutrition and behavior and that many behavior issues can be managed or even eliminated, with good nutrition and regular exercise.

Ingredients in processed foods drive many of the factors that affect your children's behavior. Excitotoxins, chemicals that impact your child's brain and can impact their behavior.  Some of the biggest culprits are food colorings (any color with a # symbol, such as red #40), high-fructose corn syrup and foods that contain MSG.

Eliminating the above items is a great place to start. If improvement is not observed, a food allergy or intolerance test may be a great next step, as many children are gluten or dairy intolerant. Discovering the root cause of your child's behavior is the ultimate goal.
